La Tabatière is an amalgamate of three seperate hamlets: Old Post, Red Bay and La Tabatière. These hamlets were built up around lands granted to concessionaires by the king of France in the 18th century.
Once the site of a thriving seal fishing indusrty, La Tabatière today maintains a snow crab processing plant. From here, you can travel along a seven kilometer stretch of gravel road to nearby Mutton Bay or venture along a similar stretch to the Robertson Lake power dam. This facility provides electrical power for all of the Lower North Shore, as well as the Labrador Straits. The construction of this dam was unique in the fact that it was the first time that the dry roll crete for such a purpose in Canada.
