Pakuashipi

Population: 300

Pakuashipi a Montagnais Community that formed in the 1970s when the previously nomadic natives took advantage of a federal housing project and settled across the river from St. Augustine. The village grew into one of the larger towns on the Lower North Shore.

The Montagnais here still follow the ways of their ancestors, having preserved their language, which they use amongst themselves, and their way of life. They still hunt, fish, trap and make handcrafted goods. They also, in general, have a good working knowledge of French, and some of the older people know English.

Landmarks and historical sites

Dead Man's Island is an old burial ground used by the Montagnais, Inuit and early white settlers. One can hire local boat owners or check with tour operators in neighbouring St. Augustine to arrange travel to this island and others.
