Harrington Harbour

Fonded October 13th, 1871, by Benjamin Simms and John Chislett, this island community of Harrington Harbour is a typical fishing community. One can stroll along beautiful wooden boardwalks that serve as the communities only roads. There is a daily taxi boat service that links Harrington to Chavery and Aylmer Sound. There are boat tours available to nearby Saint Mary’s island bird sanctuary.

No acces by air can be had except through Chevery where the taxi boat service collaberates with the airline service.

A coastal cargo-passenger ferry service operates out of Rimouski and stops in designated ports along the Coast on a seasonal basis. Pack ice from Greenland clogs most of the coast from mid January until late May.

Other means of access

The Lower North Shore as one the best kept secrets none to outdoors adventure lovers, during the long Winter months it is deserved by one of the longest snowmobiles trails in the world. Know as the "White Highway", and linking the province of Quebec’s extensive snowmobile trail network at one end and Labrador’s adventure trails at the other, it is the only real physical transportation infrastructure in the area.

Landmarks and historical sites

Harrington Harbour was home to the oldest hospital on the Lower North Shore, earning itself the nickname of Hospital Island. The original hospital had been built in 1905-1906, but was replaced by a newer one from 1950 to 1974. Since then it has become a Senior Citizens home.

In the center of town, atop a small hill, there is a monument which commemerates the visit of Jacques Cartier to the area.

Attractions

There are nearby Seabird Sanctuaries on St-Mary's Island that attract bird watchers from the Coast and abroad. In recent years, the seabird population has risen to record breaken levels offerening quite a spectacle.

Harrington Harbour has held a carnival for the past 70 or so consecutive years, and for the first 50, it was the only organized sports event on the Coast. Community Events
