Community Access Program

The Coasters Association, on behalf of the community of the Lower North Shore, has set up an internet site in St. Augustine, assisted by a Community Access Program grant from Industry Canada. This internet-based communication site is to serve the electronic communication needs of the population of the Lower North Shore. The site is connected via Quebectel "Globetrotter" network, and is comprised of various computers.

The region served by the center has limited or no accessibility to the communication highway (Internet). It has a high unemployment rate which presently is above the national average, and has a disadvantage in acquiring access to the internet at an affordable rate, compared to other places in Quebec.

The site is conveniently located for users of all ages and groups and is appropriate for internet training and everyday use. The site contains several functioning computers, as well as other hardware. At this internet location, one will find the necessary furnishings and set-up to make internet access easier.

The communities of the Lower North Shore, share a similar way of life, whether it be livelihood, language, culture, education, communication, transportation, etc; thus, there is a mutual sense of understanding and an awareness of common experiences that takes place among the people of the coast. The implementation of the internet gives the people an opportunity to work in close contact with one another for the betterment of the coast.

We realize that the geography of the Lower North Shore cannot be altered; however, with the implementation of the internet we will be able to remove some of the existing frustrations. The economy of the coast has suffered greatly over the past years as we have witnessed the gradual depletion of the once viable fishing industry; the Coasters Association are doing their utmost to help ease this burden. We are continuously making residents aware of new programs and supporting new industries. We have rapidly built a network of responsible representatives in every community along the LNS to help lobby the government for a stronger and better way of life.

This CAP site has eased the communication gap on the cost and puts us in touch with the outside world. It gives the young people renewed hope for the future. This site gave us a sense of pride and inspiration which we will surely benefit the future generations to come.

Our hats are off to Industry Canada in making this possible.
